Matthew 12:14-21 Hope for the Gentiles

Mt 12:14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. 

Mt 12:15 But when Yeshua knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; 

Mt 12:16 And charged them that they should not make him known: 

 Mt 12:17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, 

In the following verses, Yeshua fulfills what was said by Isaiah, the prophet. 

Mt 12:18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles. 

Judgement – 2920 κρίσις krisis {kree'-sis} 

Meaning:  1) a separating, sundering, separation 1a) a trial, contest 2) selection 3) judgment 3a) opinion or decision given concerning anything 3a1) esp. concerning justice and injustice, right or wrong 3b) sentence of condemnation, damnatory judgment, condemnation and 

Usage:  AV - judgment 41, damnation 3, accusation 2, condemnation 2; 48

Gentiles – 1484 ἔθνος ethnos {eth'-nos} 

Meaning:  1) a multitude (whether of men or of beasts) associated or living together 1a) a company, troop, swarm 2) a multitude of individuals of the same nature or genus 2a) the human race 3) a race, nation, people group 4) in the OT, foreign nations not worshipping the true God, pagans, Gentiles 

Usage:  AV - Gentiles 93, nation 64, heathen 5, people 2; 164

Mt 12:19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. 

Mt 12:20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.  

Mt 12:21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

As stated earlier in Matthew 12:17, That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying … 

But what did Isaiah, the prophet, actually say or prophesy?

Prophet – 4396 προφήτης prophetes {prof-ay'-tace} 

Meaning:  1) in Greek writings, an interpreter of oracles or of other hidden things

 

Isa 42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. 

Isa 42:2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. 

Isa 42:3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. 

Isa 42:4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

So how did we get from:

Isa 42:4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

To this?

Mt 12:21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

Translators

Judgment – 04941 מִשְׁפָּט mishpat {mish-pawt'} 

Meaning:  1) judgment, justice, ordinance 1a) judgment 1a1) act of deciding a case 1a2) place, court, seat of judgment 1a3) process, procedure, litigation (before judges) proper, fitting, measure, fitness, custom, manner, plan

Gentiles – 01471 גּוֹי gowy {go'-ee} rarely (shortened) גֹּי goy {go'-ee} 

Meaning:  n m 1) nation, people 1a) nation, people 1a1) usually of non-Hebrew people 1a2) of descendants of Abraham 1a3) of Israel 1b) of swarm of locusts, other animals (fig.) n pr m 1c) Goyim? = "nations" 

Usage:  AV - nation 374, heathen 143, Gentiles 30, people 11; 558

Isles – 0339 אִי 'iy {ee} 

Meaning:  1) coast, island, shore, region 

Origin:  from 0183; TWOT - 39a; n m

Usage:  AV - isle(s) 30, islands 5, country 1; 36

 

Wait – 03176 יָחַל yachal {yaw-chal'} 

Meaning:  1) to wait, hope, expect 1a) (Niphal) to wait 1b) (Piel) 1b1) to wait, await, tarry 1b2) to wait for, hope for 1c) (Hiphil) to wait, tarry, wait for, hope for 

Usage:  AV - hope 22, wait 12, tarry 3, trust 2, variant 2, stayed 1; 42

 

Law – 08451 תּוֹרָה towrah {to-raw'} or תֹּרָה torah {to-raw'} Meaning:  1) law, direction, instruction 1a) instruction, direction (human or divine) 1a1) body of prophetic teaching 1a2) instruction in Messianic age 1a3) body of priestly direction or instruction 1a4) body of legal directives 1b) law 1b1) law of the burnt offering 1b2) of special law, codes of law 1c) custom, manner 1d) the Deuteronomic or Mosaic Law Usage:  AV - law 219; 219

Isaiah wrote earlier in Chapter 9:6 concerning Messiah Yeshua:

 Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

In the grand scheme, there are two men that mattered according to Paul in 

1st Cor 15:47:

The first man, Adam

The second man, Messiah Yeshua

The instructions given to the first couple to replenish the earth, coupled with Genesis 1:1-2, left some to believe Father was starting over again and that there was a world and a people before the first couple. Stories, teachings, and beliefs abound with this chatter requiring individuals to bring in extra- Biblical material to prove their point and  ultimately casting doubt on the accuracy and authenticity of Scripture.

After the flood, Father started over with the three sons of Noah.

They were all Gentiles, although the people of Japheth were referred to as the isles of the Gentiles.  Ham and Shem were referred to as nations which is the same word as Gentiles in the Hebrew. 

Japheth

Ge 10:5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

 

Isles – 0339 אִי 'iy {ee} 

Meaning:  1) coast, island, shore, region 

Origin:  from 0183; TWOT - 39a; n m

Usage:  AV - isle(s) 30, islands 5, country 1; 36

Meaning:  n m 1) nation, people 1a) nation, people 1a1) usually of non-Hebrew people 1a2) of descendants of Abraham 1a3) of Israel 1b) of swarm of locusts, other animals (fig.) n pr m 1c) Goyim? = "nations" 

Origin:  apparently from the same root as 01465; TWOT - 326e

Usage:  AV - nation 374, heathen 143, Gentiles 30, people 11; 558

Shem

Ge 10:31 These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.

Nations – 01471 גּוֹי gowy {go'-ee} rarely (shortened) גֹּי goy {go'-ee} Meaning:  n m 1) nation, people 1a) nation, people 1a1) usually of non-Hebrew people 1a2) of descendants of Abraham 1a3) of Israel 1b) of swarm of locusts, other animals (fig.) n pr m 1c) Goyim? = "nations" Usage:  AV - nation 374, heathen 143, Gentiles 30, people 11; 558 

The word “Jew” is not used once in Torah.

The word “Gentiles” is used only once in the whole of Torah. 

The word “nation/goy” is used throughout Torah to refer to both the Foreigner nations and the nation of Israel.

Abraham was to be a great nation/goy, Genesis 12:2.

 Ge 12:1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee: 

Ge 12:2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

Moses could have been made a great nation/goy.

 Nu 14:11 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shown among them? Nu 14:12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.

Israel was called to be a holy nation/goy.

Ex 19:5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 

Ex 19:6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

The nation of Israel was to be exalted above all nations/goy.   

All nations were goy. 

The Jewish religion and the religious Jews prided themselves in referring to all non-Jews as goy, when Biblically speaking, the nation of Israel is referred to as goy also. 

 Jer 31:35 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: Jer 31:36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.

What advantages hath the Jew?

Paul lists several advantages the Jews/Hebrews had over the nations.

Ro 3:1 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? 

Ro 3:2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.

 The oracles of YeHoVaH were committed to Moses to teach the Israelites and the strangers amongst them who came out of Egypt.

 Paul explains further:

 Ro 9:4 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; 

Ro 9:5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Messiah came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. 

Ro 9:6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:

Because of these advantages, the Gospel of the Kingdom was preached to the Jews first!

Ro 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Messiah: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

 

Greek – 1672 Ἕλλην Hellen {hel'-lane} 

Meaning:  1) a Greek either by nationality, whether a native of the main land or of the Greek islands or colonies 2) in a wider sense the name embraces all nations not Jews that made the language, customs, and learning of the Greeks their own; the primary reference is to a difference of religion and worship 

Usage:  AV - Greek 20, Gentile 7; 27

Paul wrote further 

Ro 2:9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; 

Ro 2:10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: 

Ro 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

 

Gentiles – 1672 Ἕλλην Hellen {hel'-lane} 

Meaning:  1) a Greek either by nationality, whether a native of the main land or of the Greek islands or colonies 2) in a wider sense the name embraces all nations not Jews that made the language, customs, and learning of the Greeks their own; the primary reference is to a difference of religion and worship 

Usage:  AV - Greek 20, Gentile 7; 27

  • The New Testament speaks of Gentiles and Greeks as nations.

  • The High Priest referred to Israel as ethnos/nation/Gentiles, John 11:48-52.

  • Pilate spoke of Israel as ethnos/nation/Gentiles, John 18:35.

  • One new man is the result of Jews and Greeks/Gentiles, Ephesians 2:11.

  • The Jews, like the Greeks and people of the nations, must confess Yeshua.

  • There are no special passes for the Jews or anyone else. All must confess Yeshua.

Ro 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
