Matthew 16:13-28 The Christ, the Church and the Cross

Prayer

Terminology evokes images in the minds of people that affect people consciously and subconsciously in how they see themselves and in their approach to the entity they call God. Just as knowledge is power, words have power.

The translation of words from one language to another can ascribe different meanings to the words translated into the new language. In this passage of Matthew, Peter receives a revelation from YeHoVaH of who Yeshua is, and the Disciples are informed of the master plan of Messiah.

From the First Century until now, the Twenty-First Century, this passage in Matthew 16, and others like it, have conjured incorrect images of the actual words translated the Christ, the Church, and the Cross as revealed in the English translations of this passage. This has led to incorrect worship and lifestyles that differ from what the Messiah lived and taught.

Mt 16:13 When Jesus/Yeshua came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

Jesus  (IPA: /ˈdʒiːzəs/) is a masculine given name derived from the name IESVS in Classical Latin, Iēsous (Greek: Ἰησοῦς), the Greek form of the Hebrew and Aramaic name Yeshua or Y'shua (Hebrew: ישוע‎).

Mt 16:14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

The people, preachers, teachers

Herod, Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes were saying that.

Mt 16:15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

Mt 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Christ – 5547 Χριστός Christos {khris-tos'}

Meaning:  Christ = "anointed" 1) Christ was the Messiah, the Son of God 2) anointed

Usage:  AV - Christ 569; 569

The word Christ ,for most, brings to mind the image of a European savior hanging on a cross and the creator of Christianity who was born on Christmas, December 25th. These are all images and ideologies given to mankind by the Roman Catholic Church, a religious ecclesiastical institution.

From the word Christ comes:

The Christian church

The Christian sabbath

Christian music

Christian concerts

Christian movies and programs

Etc.

Christ is 04899 מָשִׁיחַ mashiyach {maw-shee'-akh}

Meaning:  1) anointed, anointed one 1a) of the Messiah, Messianic prince 1b) of the king of Israel 1c) of the high priest of Israel 1d) of Cyrus 1e) of the patriarchs as anointed kings

Origin:  from 04886; TWOT - 1255c; n m

Usage:  AV - anointed 37, Messiah 2; 39

Languages of the Bible:

Hebrew, Greek, and Latin

Mashiach in our English Bibles is  translated Messiah according to our English translation of the Hebrew.

Da 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

Da 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

The Greek translation of Mashiach in our English Bibles is Messias.

Jn 1:41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

Jn 4:25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

Christ is the Latin form of Christos.

Mashiach was given to us by YeHoVaH.

Christ was given to us by the Roman Catholic Church.

Mt 16:17 And Jesus/Yeshua answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Peter’s revelation was a fulfillment of:

Dt 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

Dt 18:19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

Peter preached this passage in:

Ac 3:20 And he shall send Jesus/Yeshua Christ, which before was preached unto you:

Ac 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

Ac 3:22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.

Ac 3:23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

Ac 3:24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.

Stephen preached this passage before he was stoned to death.

Ac 7:37 This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

Peter had a revelation from YeHoVaH.

Paul had an encounter with Yeshua.

People who know the Messiah as Jesus Christ have not had a revelation or an encounter, they only have teachings.

Mt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Church – 1577 ἐκκλησία ekklesia {ek-klay-see'-ah} Meaning:  1) a gathering of citizens called out from their homes into some public place, an assembly 1a) an assembly of the people convened at the public place of the council for the purpose of deliberating 1b) the assembly of the Israelites 1c) any gathering or throng of men assembled by chance, tumultuously

Usage:  AV - church 115, assembly 3; 118

Ac 19:32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly/church was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

Ac 19:39 But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly/church.

Ac 19:41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly/church.

Mt 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Peter was given authority based on the revelation he received from YeHoVaH.

When YeHoVaH reveals an insight to us, with the insight comes the authority to operate in that insight.

Others who have not been given that insight, may not have authority to walk in that insight.

Example: The seven sons of Sceva in Acts.

Ac 19:13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus/Yeshua, saying, We adjure you by Jesus/Yeshua whom Paul preacheth.

Ac 19:14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

Ac 19:15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus/Yeshua I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

Ac 19:16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

Ac 19:17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus/Yeshua was magnified.

Bind and Loose

Mt 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Jn 20:23 Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained.

Mt 16:20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus/Yeshua the Christ.

Mt 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus/Yeshua to show unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

Mt 16:22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

Peter rebuked the One he should have been listening to.

Mt 16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

When we refuse to listen to The Messiah, we give ourselves over to Satan.

When we do not follow The Messiah’s instructions, we render ourselves to the mercy of Satan.

Mt 16:24 Then said Jesus/Yeshua unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Cross – 4716 σταυρός stauros {stow-ros'}

Meaning:  1) an upright stake, esp. a pointed one 2) a cross 2a) a well known instrument of most cruel and ignominious punishment, borrowed by the Greeks and Romans from the Phoenicians; to it were affixed among the Romans, down to the time of Constantine the Great, the guiltiest criminals,

…particularly the basest slaves, robbers, the authors and abetters of insurrections, and occasionally in the provinces, at the arbitrary pleasure of the governors, upright and peaceable men also, and even Roman citizens themselves 2b) the crucifixion which Christ underwent

Usage:  AV - cross 28; 28

The keys to defeating and overcoming the wiles of the devil are:

  • Self denial

  • Dying to self

  • Following and obeying the instructions of The Hebrew Messiah.

Mt 16:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

Eternal Life, Biblical salvation, is not found in an English Jesus Christ.

Eternal Life, Biblical salvation, is found in nothing else or no one else than The Hebrew Messiah, Yeshua.

Mt 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Mt 16:27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

The Son of man is none other than The Hebrew Messiah, Yeshua!

Mt 16:28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
