The Hebrew concept of clean and unclean is central to understanding the Covenant between YeHoVaH and His people. YeHoVaH’s people were instructed to know the difference between clean and unclean to properly participate in worship and community life. The subject of clean and unclean is foundational in both the Old and New Covenants to understanding holiness, worship, Covenant identity, and how the people of Israel were set apart to live and serve YeHoVaH. What does it mean to be “unclean” according to Scripture? To be “unclean” means to be in a state mentioned throughout the New Testament but described in detail in the Old Testament primarily in the Book of Leviticus. Some states of uncleanness are normal occurrences. Each state of uncleanness has a corresponding remedy to becoming clean. Understanding clean and unclean helps Believers live holy, set-apart lives in obedience to His Covenant.
